والسَّوْدُ: سَفْحٌ مِنَ الْجَبَلِ مُسْتَدِقٌّ فِي الأَرض خَشِنٌ أَسود، وَالْجَمْعُ أَسوادٌ، والقِطْعَةُ مِنْهُ سَوْدةٌ وَبِهَا سُمِّيَتِ المرأَة سَوْدَةَ.
