والنَّمِرُ والنِّمْرُ: ضربٌ مِنَ السِّبَاعِ أَخْبَثُ مِنَ الأَسد، سُمِّيَ بِذَلِكَ لنُمَرٍ فِيهِ، وَذَلِكَ أَنه مِنْ أَلوان مُخْتَلِفَةٍ، والأُنثى نَمِرَةٌ وَالْجَمْعُ أَنْمُرٌ وأَنْمارٌ ونُمُرٌ ونُمْرٌ ونُمُورٌ ونِمارٌ، وأَكثر كَلَامِ الْعَرَبِ نُمْرٌ.
