What the word means

From jard, stripping a thing bare. Lisān says the Companion al-Jārūd al-ʿAbdī got the name because a disease spread from his camels and wiped out his uncles’ herds.

Classical Arabic names often came from strong or striking things in the desert world; the name is loved for who carried it.

The literal sense is plain or unflattering; families choose this name because an honoured early Muslim bore it, not for its dictionary meaning.
