What the scholars said about this name
After ḥadīth 4956 Abū Dāwūd lists names the Prophet ﷺ changed, and ʿAzīz is among them. He says he left out the chains for brevity, so that list carries no grading of its own. Ibn al-Qayyim also cites a report from the Muṣannaf of Ibn Abī Shaybah that the Prophet ﷺ renamed a man called ʿAzīz as ʿAbd al-Raḥmān; we have not found a grading for it. ʿAzīz is also one of Allah’s names, which is why many families choose ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz. Ask your imam.
