Meaning & source
Scholars differ. Al-Jawālīqī counted it among the four Arabic names of prophets; Ibn ʿAbbās is reported to have said he was named Ādam because he was created from adīm al-arḍ, the surface of the earth. Others held it to be a Syriac or Hebrew word.
